Transport authority ready to dump cartel companies

Take note – story published 1 year ago

The Road Transport Directorate has expressed its readiness to terminate the agreements with the companies involved in the bus cartel, said the Directorate on February 24.

The Road Transport Directorate sent letters to the companies involved in the cartel calling for an agreement on the early termination of contracts at a time when the continuity of service is ensured.

According to the Directorate, despite any decision taken, the Road Transport Directorate should primarily ensure the continuity of passenger transport throughout the regional bus route network in Latvia.

These companies currently provide passenger transport in seven sections of the route network.

At least 661 bus drivers are involved in providing the service. The Road Transport Directorate has surveyed carriers and found that 176 buses are currently available in the sector (39.11% of the required number of buses) and 83 bus drivers (12.56% of the required number of bus drivers). Consequently, in the event of the termination of contracts, an open procurement should be organized for the provision of a service, which takes time.
