Public media official to step down

A member of the Council of Public Electronic Media (SEPLP), Latvia's public media regulator, announced March 5 she will step down from the role.

Sanita Upleja-Jegermane will leave the position of member of public media supervisor of her own accord, according to an article she penned for the 'Delfi' portal.

According to Article 14 of the Law on Public Electronic Media, the Saeima will have to agree to her departure, though this is likely to be a formality. When asked about future plans, Upleja-Jegermane said in a conversation with LSM.lv that she has none at the moment.

In her valedictory piece, she said she has been wrestling with questions about the compliance of public media with professional and ethical standards. A recent controversy involving the so-called "Pig comic" published on the Latvian-language version of the LSM portal had brought matters to a head, she admitted.

"I would like to emphasize that my decision was not made under the influence of society or 'Twitterspace' pressure, and it is completely my internally thought-out and balanced choice, based on my professional and life experience and sense of responsibility," said Upleja-Jegermane. She also said that her attitude to the use of the Russian language in the public media sphere was at odds with those of her colleagues on the Council and was another contributory factor.
