The Song and Dance Festival Flag Ceremony is a symbolic opening event at every festival, remembering the first Song Festival in 1873, when the Baltic Teachers’ Seminary Choir stood next to the Līgo flag and performed Kārlis Baumanis’ Dievs, svētī Latviju! (God Bless Latvia!), which is now the Latvian national anthem, for the first time.
