Mārtiņš Mits confirmed as Constitutional Court justice

On Thursday, February 15, the Saeima supported the appointment of Mārtiņš Mits as a Constitutional Court (ST) justice.

Previously, Mits' candidacy for the post of justice of the ST was evaluated by the Legal Affairs Committee of the Saeima. The Legal Affairs Committee decided that Mits' nomination complies with the requirements for the post and supported the advancement of the draft decision approving Mits as justice of the ST for consideration by the Saeima.

The Constitutional Court is comprised of seven justices, who are confirmed into office by the majority vote of the Saeima – with at least 51 votes.

Mits holds a law degree with a specialization in international public law from the University of Lund in Sweden. He has been a judge of the European Court of Human Rights since 2015.

A new candidate is selected for the post of ST justice because the mandate of Justice Gunārs Kusiņš will end on February 19, 2024.
