King of Spain visiting Latvia

On Tuesday, June 25, King Felipe VI of Spain is visiting the Ādaži military base near Rīga to meet with Spanish troops currently stationed here.

The Spanish monarch will be accompanied by Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs and Minister of Defense Andris Sprūds.

Spain is one of the 11 members of the battle group of NATO's extended presence in Latvia. The battle group is led by Canada, bringing together around 1,900 soldiers from Albania, the Czech Republic, Italy, Iceland, Canada, Montenegro, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and North Macedonia, who are on duty in Latvia on a rotating basis.

In response to the need to strengthen the defense capabilities of the Baltic region after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, on June 26, 2022, a NASAMS battery of surface-to-air anti-aircraft missiles supplied by Spain was deployed at the National Armed Forces Aviation Base in Lielvārde.

During his visit, Felipe VI will also have brief talks with Prime Minister Evika Siliņa. The high-profile royal is on a Midsummer tour of the Baltic states, having already visited Estonia and Lithuania
