"With Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's passing a whole era has finished not only in the history of the United Kingdom, but the world. This is a sad day for not only the British nation but the world," said Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs on social media on Thursday September 8 evening after the death of the UK's monarch was announced.

Latvian President Egils Levits and Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš also sent condolences to the Royal Family.

Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-reigning monarch, paid a visit to Latvia in 2006 meeting with then-president Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga. In an interview with Latvian Television on Thursday, former president Vīķe-Freiberga said: "Her life is proof to how important the functions of a representative head of state can be and play a political role."

A video from the archive documenting the visit is seen below.
