It is the first time that a Member of the Baltic States has been entrusted with such a high position in the European Parliament.
The 63-year-old economist Zīle has been one of the leaders of the National Alliance for many years, fulfilling the duties of both finance and transport ministers. As an MEP, he has been in office since 2004.
Zile represents the European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR Group). According to the mathematical breakdown formula used by the EP, his political group is due to one of the 14 deputy posts. Zīle was elected with the votes of 403 members in the second round of voting.
Today I am humbled and grateful Latvian. Grateful to the MEPs who have placed their trust in me to represent them as their Vice-President. And of course special birthday greetings to the new @EP_President Roberta Metsola and other elected colleagues! pic.twitter.com/kTifZKznje
