Kariņš updates public on coalition formation process

Take note – story published 5 years ago

Prime Ministerial nominee Krišjānis Kariņš told the press January 14 that his efforts to form a government are proceeding and that the five parties involved in negotiations hope to have a government declaration, a cooperation agreement and a fiscal discipline contract drawn up by Thursday evening.

That would give party boards of the New Unity party, For Development/For!, the New Conservatives, KPV LV and the National Alliance Friday and Saturday to examine and approve the documents.

Speaking after the latest round of talks, Kariņš said "I anticipate that next Friday I will speak once again with our State President and that after that... we could confirm the next government."

In addition he said that spending promises made by the various parties during their campaigns were being evaluated with the help of the Finance Ministry, but that 2019 would see no radical soending changes and certainly no new taxes as the new government will start work without a 2019 budget in place, due to the protracted nature of government formation attempts since parliamentary elections on October 6, 2018.
