Coalition left with 50 parliamentary seats as MP Zelderis leaves faction

On Wednesday, June 19, MP Edgars Zelderis resigned from the Saeima faction "Progressives", his party "Mēs - Talsiem un novadam" said.

Zelderis will now work as an independent MP. This means that the coalition now has one less vote. The coalition-forming New Unity, Greens and Farmers Union and Progressives factions in the Saeima now have only 50 votes between them.

The coalition is mostly supported by non-partisan MP Olegs Burovs and also Igors Rajevs.

At the end of May, the regional party "Mēs - Talsiem un novadam", led by Zelders, announced that it was ending its cooperation with Progressives due to differences of opinion. When asked about the reasons for the disagreement, Zelder cited the vote on the bill to dissolve the Rēzekne City Council as the most prominent example. Zelderis, who was also mayor of Talsi, abstained.

"The situation in Talsi, where the financial situation is also difficult, is not very different from that in Rēzekne. But Talsi is not considered. Dismissal of the Rēzekne City Council is a political choice," Zelderis said.
