The Latvian Parliament, the Saeima, is inviting secondary and elementary school students to apply for the “Meet the Saeima” school program to learn more about how the country is governed and the role they can play in it, said the Saeima's press service November 1.

The content of the program allows young people to strengthen and complement their lessons in public administration and how parliament works, to discuss various issues and participate in an debating competition.

"The aim of the improved school program is to attract young people to the political process in Latvia, to encourage them to follow and become involved in parliamentary activities, and to educate them about the Saeima and its structure, legislation, parliamentary work, democracy and public participation," the Saeima said.

There is also a chance to visit the Saeima itself to watch the legislative process in action, and for schools to receive visits from Saeima deputies and officials.

The first visitors to the updated school program were students of Riga Second Gymnasium (pictured).

Schools can apply for the Meet the Saeima program by calling 67087321 or sending an e-mail to [email protected]. An application form and more information can be found on the Saeima website: http://www.saeima.lv/lv/sabiedribas-lidzdaliba/skolu-programma-iepazisti-saeimu.

The school program "Meet the Saeima" was launched in 2012 and has so far introduced the work of parliament to about seven thousand students from all over Latvia.
