Russian citizen detained in Latvia on suspicion of spying

The State Security Service (VDD) detained a Russian citizen on December 20 on suspicion of espionage for the benefit of the Russian special service, the service reported January 3.

Criminal proceedings against this person were initiated on December 18 last year for illegally collecting and transferring classified information and other information to a foreign intelligence service on its behalf (Section 85, Paragraph one of the Criminal Law).

The information obtained during the VDD investigation shows that the person has collected and transferred information regarding critical infrastructure and military objects in Latvia to the Russian Special Service.

According to the information at the disposal of the Service, the person has also provided other types of support to the Russian Special Service in ensuring activities directed against the State of Latvia.

The VDD has carried out criminal proceedings at five premises in and around Riga. A large number of media and documents have been removed for in-depth research.

The suspect has been placed in custody as a means of security.
