Alleged cattle fraudster to face 55 charges

The Prosecutor's Office of East Latgale has sent a criminal case to the court in which a board member of a wholesale cattle business is being prosecuted for 55 criminal offenses of fraud, two of which are particularly serious crimes, the Prosecutor's Office said December 5.

According to the decision to refer the criminal case to the court, a man, as a member of the board of directors and commercial director of a company engaged in the wholesale distribution of live animals, decided to obtain foreign property through fraud, knowing that the agreed payment would not be made, and intended to cause damage to the victims.

The offenses were committed between February 2021 and June 2021.

The man has allegedly defrauded businesses in over a dozen municipalities across Latvia of a total of 374 cattle, 28 hay rolls from a farm in the municipality of Kuldīga and 900 kilograms of wheat grain and transport services from a farm in the municipality of Jekabpils, causing a total of 55 victims material losses of EUR 257,492.

The case has been referred to Latgale District Court for examination.
