Latvian citizen detained for migrant transport organization

Last week, the State Border Guard detained a Latvian citizen who reportedly organized the transfer of migrants from the border area to Riga via the Telegram app, the State Border Guard said October 7.

During operational measures, border guards detained a Latvian citizen in the Rēzekne municipality who, for a fee, organized the transport of nine persons who had illegally crossed the state border from the Belarusian-Latvian border area to Rīga.

The measures also led to the detection of nine third-country citizens without travel documents, valid visas, and residence permits.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the Latvian citizen.

This year, 4,577 people have been deterred from crossing the Latvian-Belarusian border illegally, while 16 people have been admitted to Latvia on humanitarian grounds.

The government recently decided to extend the reinforced border surveillance regime at the Belarusian border until December 31.
