The Internal Security Bureau (IDB) has sent a case for prosecution against two Daugavpils municipal police officials who are alleged to have abused their position of service by exerting undue physical force against an individual, the IDB said on May 10.

In the course of the pre-trial investigation, the IDB obtained evidence that the two police officials of the local government, whose duties included ensuring public safety and order, following the arrest and placement of an individual in the section of the detained persons of the service vehicle, applied violence against them.

The municipal police officers, without a legal reason, repeatedly and intentionally hit the person on the body with their feet and hands, it is alleged.

As a result, the person suffered bodily injuries of moderate severity.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated in accordance with Section 317, Paragraph two of the Criminal Law.

In relation to what happened, the police officials of Daugavpils municipality have been dismissed from work.

The IDB recalls that everyone is considered innocent until proven guilty.
