The person detained by the VDD has not been named but is described as a dual citizen of Estonia and Russia. Criminal proceedings have been launched against the individual for assisting the Russian special services in an activity directed against Latvia.
The VDD had received information that on January 29, a person desecrated the memorial stone "Defenders of Kurzeme Fortress - Latvian Legion soldiers" in Džukste Parish of Tukums Region by dousing the memorial stone with red paint on behalf of the Russian special services.
In the investigation, the VDD closely cooperated with its Lithuanian and Estonian partner services, as there are suspicions that the person has carried out similar activities at memorial sites in other Baltic countries as well. The suspect has been remanded in custody as a security measure.
Meanwhile in Estonia the security services said attacks last year on cars belonging to a goverment minister and journalist were also the work of Russia's special services, according to ERR News. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia said it will summon Russia's top diplomat in Estonia over the vandalism.
