Police officer suspected of retransmitting banned TV channels

The Internal Security Bureau of Latvia (IDB) has detained an officer in the Latgale administration of State Police on suspicion of providing access to television channels banned in Latvia, IDB said on March 29.

In a statement to the media, the IDB said that the official of the State Police provided services to natural persons not affiliated with the performance of service duties, for payment.

The Office for Internal Security has carried out a series of procedural activities during which confirmation has been obtained regarding the illegal conduct of a State Police official.

Open connections to the TV channels have been terminated.

Non-custodial security means shall be applied to the suspected official of the State Police. No further information is currently provided in the interest of the investigation.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, many Russian and Belarusian TV channels and websites have been banned in Latvia to prevent national security risks.
