The State Security Service (VDD) has detained a citizen of Latvia of Islamic faith in relation to suspected public glorification and justification of terrorism, as well as the distribution of materials glorifying, justifying, and appealing to terrorism, the VDD said August 31.

Criminal proceedings against a person were initiated on August 14 of this year.

The person came to the attention of the VDD due to activities that indicated his possible focus on the radical interpretation of Islam, which supports the use of violence to achieve ideological objectives.

The VDD found that the person shared TikTok videos that glorify the ideology of Islamist terrorist groups.

“In an in-depth investigation of personal activities, the Service identified support for the Daesh terrorist organization, as well as his evidence of the readiness to engage in violent activities on behalf of Islam. VDD also obtained information that the person showed an increased interest in firearms,” VDD said in a statement.

The suspected person is in custody. The investigation into the case continues.
