The criminal investigations unit of the State Border Guard in collaboration with officers of the aviation division detained the official on July 22. The official has been declared a suspect in the criminal probe launched into the trafficking plot and has been remanded in custody.

Representatives of the State Border Guard said that the plot to smuggle the five persons across the state border was thwarted in its early stages thanks to enhanced internal control mechanisms which help prevent corruptive crimes in the Border Guard.

Interior Minister Sandis Ģirģens (KPV KV) praised the Border Guard’s internal control efforts, noting that dishonest employees will have no place in the Border Guard or any other law enforcement agency, representatives of the Interior Ministry informed LETA.
