The Rīga District Court has sentenced a young man to a life behind bars for killing a pregnant woman last February, the Prosecutor's spokeswoman Laura Majevska told the press May 22.

According to the prosecution, the man - who was not named - had learned the woman is expecting a child from him and decided to kill her as he did not want to assume responsibility for his offspring.

In 2016 there were 55 people serving a life sentence in Latvia. In Latvia, prisoners sentenced to life can apply for parole after spending 25 years behind bars.

Also May 22, State Police said they had re-opened a murder case concerning the murder of a woman ten years ago in the town of Ogre.
