Latvian Television reported at the beginning of October that the school's principal Raivis Pauls had turned to the police after receiving an anonymous letter from a student alleging sexual abuse by a teacher. The teacher was then detained. He does not cooperate with the police.
“Our work is not simple, so to say. There is another qualification [in addition to the sexual abuse offense] for resisting a representative of the state authorities at the time of arrest. I think everything about this person is clear,” said State Police representative Vilnis Naglis.
Another suspect appears in criminal proceedings. After the teacher was detained, he tried to influence the victims. However, the security measure applied to him does not involve deprivation of liberty. He has been interviewed by the police. In the meantime, the teacher remains in custody.
Three pupils have been identified as victims and there is likely to be a fourth.
The teacher is young and inspiring, and so far, there was no suspicion. Now the inspectors also work in schools where he taught children until he started working in Carnikava.
“We will continue to work with other schools, and look at historical facts. No one is hiding such heroes,” the police spokesman added.
The police stress the importance of mutual trust between children and parents. Such crimes can only be detected if children are not afraid to speak.
“It's just talk. And the parents must be observant. And not just when the child is four or five years old or starts school. Including high school. The parents are responsible! You have to pay attention to the changes, the circle of friends. Parents need to know everything: what they are doing in their spare time, big trouble, small trouble. If the parents know everything, such a situation will not come,” Naglis said.
If the teacher's guilt is proven and there is a conviction, he may face imprisonment for up to 15 years.
