Explosives clearing drills take place in Cekule, Latvia

From October 7 to 20, the annual military exercise "Detonators 2024" takes place in Cekule, Ropaži Municipality, during which the area is cleared of explosive objects in the territory of the former ammunition depots of Cekule, the National Armed Forces (NBS) said.

The exercise is being conducted with the participation of soldiers from the 54th Combat Support Battalion of the National Guard, the Combat Support and Training Center of the Training Command, as well as representatives from the Belgian, French, Estonian, Luxembourg, Dutch and German Armed Forces. The training is supported by the NBS Military Police and the Support Command.

The aim of the military exercise "Detonators 2024" is to clear the ground surface of explosive objects, as well as to promote cooperation and exchange of experience in explosive ordnance disposal procedures.

The 54th Combat Support Battalion of the National Guard has been organizing this annual exercise on the site of the former ammunition depots in Cekule since 2008. The site was used for military purposes between 1920 and 1995. Today, the 240-hectare site remains one of the largest sites contaminated with explosive objects in Latvia. Since 1994, several hundred explosive objects have been found and neutralized.

The NBS calls on the public to be understanding of the ongoing exercise and not to visit the former ammunition storage area in Cekule for security reasons.

If you find explosive objects, the NBS asks you not to touch, disassemble or attempt to move them. The site should be fenced and marked as far as possible. Report the discovery to the State Police (calling 110) or by calling 112.
