Crisis advice booklet now available in simplified-language version

The official "How to act in case of a crisis" booklet is now available in a simplified-language version, the Ministry of Defense said December 1.

The Blind Library of Latvia (Latvijas Neredzīgo bibliotēka) and the Easy Language Agency (Vieglās Valodas aģentūra) worked on the new version for the Ministry, which said the availability of the booklet in easy language "will significantly facilitate people's perception of information and will give them the opportunity to prepare themselves in time for a possible crisis."

"The assumption that only people with mental disorders need texts in easy language is misleading. At a time when there is so much information around and people are worried about missing something important, news, if not in easy, then at least in simple language, makes it easier for many of us to understand complex texts," said Irīna Melnik, head of the Easy Language Agency.

The text of the new edition of the booklet consists mainly of simple, non-expanded sentences and does not use compound words.
