On Saturday, by noon, 38 third-country nationals were detained at the Latvian border who tried to enter the country illegally, the LETA agency reported, citing the State Border Guard.

At the same time, the border guard noted that on the evening of Friday, August 6, five persons who had crossed the border illegally were detained.

All those detained have been processed in accordance with the procedures specified in the Immigration Law and placed in accommodation centers for detained foreigners.

It has already been reported that, assessing the situation in Lithuania, as well as taking into account the growing risks on the Latvian-Belarusian state border, enhanced border surveillance had been introduced and the resources of the State Border Guard and the army have been mobilized. Support is also provided by four experts from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš and Minister of the Interior Marija Golubeva announced that Latvia plans to accelerate the construction of Latvian-Belarusian border infrastructure and send additional army forces to enhance security.
