More military aid to Ukraine approved by Latvian government

On the morning of Thursday, July 28, the Latvian government supported a call from the Ministry of Defense to provide additional military support to Ukraine. However, exactly what form this will take is, so far, unclear.

The decision was made behind closed doors and without media opportunities to question ministers. In a conversation with Latvian Radio, Defense Minister Artis Pabriks did not reveal what kind of help will be provided to Ukraine this time, while lauding the government decision on social media.

"For now, I cannot provide very comprehensive information. I can only express thanks that the Latvian government this morning supported the call of the Ministry of Defense to provide additional military assistance to our friend Ukraine and its armed forces," Pabriks told Latvian Radio.

So far Latvia has provided military support to Ukraine worth more than 200 million euros, providing weapons and individual equipment, drones, dry food rations, ammunition, anti-tank weapons and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles. Per capita it is one of the biggest military donors to Ukraine, a point underlined by Pabriks in his comments.

"We have already provided support in the amount of at least one-third of our military budget. This amount, which we agreed today, is also measured in double-digit millions [of euros]," said Pabriks.

Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš also confirmed that a decision on "additional military contribution to Ukraine's fight against Russian aggression" had been made, but gave no further details.
