National Guard member dies during training

A member of the Latvian National Guard (Zemessardze) died during a training exercise at the weekend, the National Armed Forces (NAF) confirmed January 16.

"On January 14, during the military training of the National Armed Forces, a national guard lost consciousness at the 'Mežaine' range in Kuldīga district. The medical staff on the spot provided first aid and the Emergency Medical Service was immediately called, which pronounced him dead upon arrival. The State Police also arrived at the scene," a NAF statement said, describing the training as of "low intensity" but not providing any details of the incident or the precise cause of death.

A special investigation and a service investigation have been launched to ascertain the circumstances of the incident, the NAF said, and extended its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased.
