SORTIQ triumphs at Women in Tech hackathon

The annual "Women in Tech" hackathon "Energy. Resources. Efficiency." was held over the weekend of March 12-13, gathering participants both in person, in the Nature House of the University of Latvia, and online.

The goal of the hackathon was to encourage participants to create innovative technology projects, especially among those who are new to the field.

The winner of the main prize of the hackathon was the "SORTIQ" team, who created an application that, using machine learning, will help its users to significantly reduce waste generation and responsibly dispose of household items that are no longer useful to them.

In second place was the "ION" team with a project that offered an innovative solution for car electric charging stations in cities.

"SORTIQ'' received a cash prize of 1000 euros, tickets to the "Riga COMM'' conference and prizes from Accenture Baltics, while 3 teams - "ION", "EarthWise" and "United" - will be given the opportunity to participate in the Startup Wise Guys pre-acceleration program.

In addition, prizes were given to their favorite teams by Atea, Rimi Latvia, Printify and the Dutch Embassy in Latvia. 15 teams participated in the hackathon with participants from 10 countries.

"Organizing this event for the fourth year in a row, we still see a large number of participants who take part in the hackathon for the first time. This is gratifying because it confirms our belief that when it comes to innovations, creativity and determination are often more important than extensive experience. Our mentors also commented that the ideas presented by the participants were of very high quality this year, which is why it is especially important to continue to provide an open and inclusive environment where anyone can feel safe to dream and develop their ideas," said Riga TechGirls representative and event lead Līna Sarma.
