U.S. summer work scholarships open to young Latvians

Young people from Latvia have an opportunity to broaden their horizons with some summer work in the United States, the U.S. embassy in Rīga has announced.

The Ambassadors Fund for Summer Work Travel (SWT) Scholarship is a competitive scholarship funded by the U.S. Department of State. The scholarship offers opportunities to visit and spend up to four months in the United States on the BridgeUSA Summer Work Travel Program.

"Scholarship recipients demonstrate a willingness and interest in developing skills related to community building, media literacy, storytelling and intercultural competencies, seek to gain professional experience in the United States, to improve their English language skills, and to share their own culture with Americans," says publicity imformation.

Applicants need to be Latvian citizens aged 18 to 28 who are currently enrolled at an accredited academic institution and who have good English-language skills.

The deadline for applications is January 13, and full details of the criteria plus precisely what is on offer are available at: https://www.swtscholarships.org/latvia. According to this information, many of the employment opportunities offered appear to be at amusement parks and summer tourist resorts.
