Social media rat-tled about central station wildlife

Riga Central Station Square has been taken over by rats. A video posted on social networks showing at least ten hungry ones scurrying around the garbage bins has caused much resonance and shock among the public, Latvian Radio reported on December 6.

The video shows at least ten rats not particularly afraid of the person taking the video as they continue their quest for food. People write outraged comments on the internet about this, saying there was no such big mess even in the 90s.

This video has been watched more than 50 thousand times in 12 hours.

The rats weren't seen there Wednesday morning by Latvian Radio but a deep cave is noticeable in a snowdrift outside the bin.

Addressed bystanders express different emotions about rats.

Aigars: "They run here all the time in the dustbins because their house is here. That's the norm. Everyone wants to eat and live. Let them live. They don't bother anyone."

Voldemārs: "I'm not surprised. It is what it is with cleanliness. That's typical. While living in Riga, it happens many times that [tidying up] tends to be delayed. I didn't know that this kind of thing [rats] existed here, but if you say it is so, I say again - I'm not surprised."

Alde: "Because I don't live on social networks, I don't know anything. You scared me now."

The shopping center “Origo” adjacent to the station has not yet provided an answer, but Riga City Council explained that the manager of the particular territory is responsible for the rats.
