Mystery tree cutter sought in Valmiera district

Six trees have been illegally cut along the national highway Valmiera–Brenguļi–Biksejas (V196) in the Valmiera region, "Latvijas Valsts ceļi" (Latvian State Roads/LVC) has said. The road agency has informed the State Police (VP) about the incident, asking it to find and prosecute the guilty person.

The site of the incident has been surveyed by the specialists of the Association of Arborists of Latvia, who concluded that the works were carried out in violation of tree care standards, and that the person performing the work was not a professional arborist but an amateur.

Pictures show large branches have been cut off, up to a considerable height, so whoever carried out the unsanctioned works clearly had a considerable amount of equipment and would have been highly visible while doing it.

The law on highways stipulates that state highways and their territories are the property of the Republic of Latvia, under the control of LVC. The law also stipulates that persons who have carried out arbitrary works on that territory without permission must put it right at their own expense.
