24 forest and grass fires in 24 hours in Latvia

Over the last 24 hours, from June 14 at 6:30 to June 15 at 6:30, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) received 70 calls. Of those 49 were for fire-fighting, including eight forest fires and 16 dry grass fires, VUGD said Thursday.

There is a high fire hazard throughout the country due to the ongoing drought.

Firefighters have extinguished already 500 fires in June this year, two and a half times more than in the corresponding period last year when 196 fires were extinguished.

On the other hand, the number of forest fires has already exceeded the total number of forest fires recorded last year – 288 have been fought this year, while a total of 248 forest fires have been extinguishe last year.

The VUGD calls for everyone to be very careful about using an open flame. A spark from a cigarette, grill, fire, or vehicle can cause a devastating fire.
