Deer shooters fined and banned

The State Forest Service (VMD) has imposed the maximum penalty stipulated in the Hunting Act on a man who shot deer from a moving car, the service has announced.

As reported by LSM at the time, outrage was widespead after footage circulated on social media in December of a deer hunt conducted from a moving vehicle on a road.

The organizer of the drive-by slaughter – who, like all the prticipants, has not been named – is subject to the maximum penalty stipulated in the Hunting Law for such a violation - a fine of 250 euros, plus a two-year-long ban on hunting.

Three other persons who were registered as participants in these 'motor hunts' and were in the car recording the video footage were fined 150 euros each for a violation of hunting safety, while the person filmed shooting animals received a 250 euro fine and a one-year hunting ban.

The State Police is also examining the case. The Latvian Hunters' Union has sharply condemned such dangerous and irresponsible behavior, noting that "there is no place for such persons among hunters".
