Over 700 million bottles and cans returned to Latvia's deposit system

Since February 2022, when the deposit system started operating in Latvia, more than 700 million packaging units have been transferred to it, representatives of LLC “Deposit packaging operator” (DIO) told LETA March 25.

931 million packages have been placed on the market since the deposit system was introduced.

According to the company, 86% of packages were returned in the first two months of 2024, including 92% of glass packaging, 87% of Peta packaging and 79% of tin packaging.

DIO also, in collaboration with the charity “Ziedot.lv”, continues to implement the donation initiative “donate your deposit,” giving residents the opportunity to divert the deposit fee for the transferred packages to charity. Residents donated 50,739 euros through reverse vending machines in the first two months of this year.

Donations amounting to EUR 18,426 have been diverted to support Ukraine, EUR 17,068 have been donated to animal shelters, and in support of deprived seniors – EUR 6,776. In turn, in support of seriously ill children, residents have diverted 16.7% of the total donated this year, or EUR 8,469.

In total, in the first two months of this year, residents donated 1.1% of the deposit fee returns.

The deposit system for beverage packaging started operating in Latvia on February 1, 2022. The Environmental Service decided to entrust the beverage packaging deposit system to DIO for seven years.
