In the center and other neighborhoods, new linden, ash, bird cherry, lilac, oaks, maples, decorative apple trees and other trees will be planted. This week, planting of trees started in one of the city's most lively traffic hubs – Brīvības Drive.
On Wednesday, May 24, Selena Vancāne, Chair of the Housing and Environment Committee of the Riga City Council, said: “This year, it is important to green the city, because trees, plants, parks, urban forests provide a tangible benefit to the residents, both in terms of air quality and protecting the city from heat and heavy rains. This year's record number – 1,000 – is just the beginning, we are planning to increase this number significantly in the future,” said Vancāne.
Last year, the Department of Housing and Environment planted 155 trees in the streets.
The planting of trees also takes place during street redevelopment and other building projects. In parks and squares, trees are planted by the municipal company “Riga Forests”. The total number of planted trees in the capital will therefore be significantly higher.
