Evacuations near Jēkabpils as flooding continues

Six people in total have needed evacuation so far near Jēkabpils due to the Daugava overflooding, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) said.

At 9 in the morning on Thursday, the VUGD received information from the municipality of Jēkabpils that two people needed to be evacuated from a house in Krustpils Parish.

As they made their way to the flooded area, fire rescuers found a meadow and a road about one kilometer long had flooded between the driveway and the residential home.

Firefighters made it by boat to the building and brought people to safety.

VUGD is urging residents in at-risk areas to keep an eye on the development of the situation and be prepared to evacuate. The situation can change rapidly during flooding and is highly unpredictable.

If relatives or close acquaintances, especially the elderly, live in flood-prone areas, call them regularly and remind them of the need to evacuate if the situation or household conditions deteriorate rapidly. If evacuation is required, call the single emergency call number 112.

Overall, the VUGD has so far evacuated six people from flooded areas on Thursday.
