Dairy plant faces closure for polluting river

Take note – story published 1 year ago

As a result of long-term environmental pollution with untreated wastewater, the State Environmental Service (VVD) has warned the Mālpils dairy plant (Mālpils piensaimnieks) of the suspension of the operation of the milk processing plant, VVD said October 26.

Production wastewater has been found to contaminate the river Suda, the service said.

The Mālpils dairy plant has been subjected to numerous administrative penalties before. During the inspections, it was concluded that no treatment of wastewater from production was carried out, no proper management of the sewer system was maintained, and the company had not been connected to the centralized sewer system of Mālpils.

The warning issued by the VVD provides that the operation of the plant will be suspended if, within three months from the date of notification of the warning, October 18, this year, the Mālpils dairy plant will not have connected to the centralized sewer network of Mālpils.

VVD suspends the operation of plants if they repeatedly violate the regulatory enactments regarding environmental protection and do not comply with the administrative enactments of the State Environmental Protection Authorities, explained in the service.
