Gray partridge chosen as Latvia's bird of the year 2021

Take note – story published 3 years ago

The Latvian Ornithological Society (LOB) has on January 4 chosen the gray partridge (Perdix perdix) as its bird of the year for 2021, and is inviting the public to report sightings of the bird during the next twelve months.

Sightings of the partridge and other birds can be recorded at Dabasdati.lv

"Very little is known about the gray partridge. It is habitual for the species to hide, so its presence is not always recorded," said ornithologist Ainārs Auniņš.

The habitat of the gray partridge is fields and meadows (not pear trees, as suggested in a carol). The bird has been chosen this year to encourage more environmentally friendly agriculture practices, as its population is thought to decline due to chemicals used in agriculture.

The campaign "Bird of the year" was launched in 1996 and has been active ever since.
