Riga Zoo has two Galapagos tortoises, Trīna and Čelsija. Over 20 years, led by weightlifter Raimonds Bergmanis, the great tortoises have been lifted and weighed by Latvian and European weightlifters, Mr. Universe Aivars Visockis, and other muscle-heroes.
At first, weightlifter Bergmanis could easily do the job by himself as the tortoises weighed a mere half-hundred kilos, however, lately they seem to have put some weight on them. In 2019, Trīna weighed 117 kg and Čelsija 90 kg.
It is estimated that female Galapagos tortoises might weigh up to 150 kg and not worry about it. Rapid weight loss, however, might signify health problems - no dieting for these ladies.
The annual tortoise-lifting will take place today, August 13, at 14:00 at the Riga Zoo. Visitors are asked to comply with distancing rules. We will update you on the results.
