Covid incidence on the decline in Latvia

The incidence of Covid-19 in Latvia has decreased, Latvian Radio reported on October 9.

In August and September, the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) found that one in five people who underwent a laboratory test was ill, but now on average, one in nine people is diagnosed with the disease.

The SPKC also observes that fewer people are admitted to hospitals with Covid.

"Every upswing has an end. It [the increase in the summer] was more related to the travel season and also to the introduction of the new strain in Latvia. From mid-July onwards, we also saw an increase [in incidence] in wastewater monitoring. Now we are seeing a decrease," said Ilze Ūdre, SPKC.

However, Ūdre said that the situation still needs to be monitored, as it is possible that another new strain of the Covid virus could emerge and the incidence could rise again.

The first results on monitoring influenza and other viruses are expected at the SPKC on Wednesday October 9.
