Number of hospitalized patients with Covid continues to rise

The number of Čovid-19 cases continues to increase in Latvia, including the number of inpatient patients, reaching 401 last week (307 a week ago), the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) reported on December 13.

Last week, 339 cases of Covid-19 were laboratory confirmed (329 a week earlier), with a total of 821 laboratory tests performed for the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (962 a week ago). The number of patients in hospitals continues to increase, with 401 patients in hospitals l last week (307 a week earlier). Last week, there were 12 patients in hospitals with severe disease (previously also 12).

29 deaths of Covid-19 patients were recorded (23 a week earlier). The number of reported deaths was in the age group “40 years and over.” In at least six cases, the primary diagnosis was Covid-19. Contracting Covid-19 often significantly exacerbates pre-existing chronic diseases that require hospitalization and can lead to death.

The influenza prevalence rate remains low, but there is a slight increase.

To reduce the risk of severe illness and death, vaccination against seasonal influenza and Covid-19 is recommended for anyone, yet specifically recommended for people who experience acute upper respiratory tract infections often in severe form and are at high risk of complications, the SPKC noted.

Nearly 100 thousand residents have already been vaccinated against influenza with the state-paid vaccine this season, while nearly 27 thousand have been vaccinated against Covid-19.
