Flu epidemic is over in Latvia

The influenza epidemic declared in January will end in Latvia on Thursday, April 25, the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) has announced,

Monitoring data for influenza and acute upper respiratory tract infections show that the number of patients with these infections did not exceed 100 cases per 100,000 population in any of the areas monitored over the past two weeks.

Nevertheless, the circulation of influenza viruses is still ongoing and a total of 20 influenza cases were recorded in six administrative areas (Ventspils, Rezekne, Jēkabpils, Jūrmala, Daugavpils and Rīga) last week.

Since the start of the season, a total of 3442 clinically confirmed influenza cases have been reported by general practitioners in Latvia.

With the end of the flu epidemic, state-funded home visits by GPs to flu patients are no longer valid, the National Health Service said. This does not apply to patients who always receive state-funded GP visits - children up to 18 years of age, disabled patients in Groups I and II, and other patient groups.

The SPKC assesses the intensity of the influenza epidemic this season as medium. The influenza epidemic was declared on January 12, as the average influenza intensity increased significantly during the second week of the year and exceeded the baseline level.

The highest number of influenza cases this season has been observed in the age group 0-14 years.

This winter, 413 seniors were admitted to the hospital with a primary diagnosis of seasonal influenza. The vast majority, 94%, had not been vaccinated against influenza.

A total of 54,370 laboratory tests for SARS-CoV-2 have also been carried out in Latvia since the start of the season, of which 8,236 were positive. 7,210 Covid-19 patients were hospitalised.
