25% more Covid-19 hospitalizations last week in Latvia

Last week, the number of hospitalized Covid patients and of newly identified cases of Covid-19 rose, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) data December 20.

Between December 13 and December 19 the number of newly detected Covid-19 cases rose by 12.6%. The number of hospitalized patients rose by 25.5%, with an average daily of 53 people admitted to hospitals (43 the week before). The number of patients with severe symptoms declined by 15.9%.

On average, 9,780 tests were conducted per day (9,458 the week before), while 742 new cases were detected on average daily (659 before). Of all tests performed, 22% (14,998 tests) were associated with screening of educational establishments, while 78% (53,461 tests) of the rest of the population. Of the positive cases of Covid-19, 9% (499 infected) were associated with the screening of educational establishments, while 91% (5,195 infected) were in the rest of the population.

Covid-19 infection was reported 2.1 times more frequently in unvaccinated and partially vaccinated people in Latvia than fully vaccinated (per 100 000 inhabitants).

In Latvia, 38 cases of variant SARS-CoV-2 Omicron have been identified so far.
