Midsummer in Latvia was calmer than usual, says emergency team

This year there were relatively few "traditional" Midsummer injuries and the celebrations passed without major accidents or serious consequences, said Laura Bērziņa, public relations specialist of the Emergency Medical Service (NMPD) on June 24.

Describing the work of medics on June 23 and the night of June 24, she said, compared to other Midsummers, it was calm, although compared to every day, the total number of injuries increased by about a third. Most of these injuries were domestic.

There were several cases of choking on shashlik, but the celebrators managed to cope on their own.

NMPD medics have had some more serious calls where the accident victims were injured while under the influence of alcohol.

"I think the weather played a very big role, which this year has been... not hot. There has been rain and there has been cooler weather, so the types of injuries have been different to other years. If in hot weather there are more pronounced drownings and more recklessness and so on, then this year has been kind of calmer, more sober," added the NMPD spokesperson.

The State Fire and Rescue Service received 99 calls. In 20 cases, residents saw smoke and flames from bonfires and assumed it was a fire.
