Swine fever found in three farms in one week in Latvia

The third outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in a week has been detected in a 24-pig holding in Vecate parish, the Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) said on June 25.

This is the second outbreak of the disease in Valmiera municipality in less than a week and the third outbreak in Latvia this summer.

Control and containment measures are being taken in the affected holding, the PVD said. Pigs in the holding will be killed to eliminate the outbreak and prevent further spread of the disease.

A quarantine zone is being established around the ASF-affected holding.

The PVD strongly urges domestic pig keepers to comply with the biosecurity requirements: to change clothes and shoes after field work and before going to the barn, not to give pigs green fodder, fruit and vegetables from their garden, and to disinfect the rolling parts of agricultural machinery before entering the farm.

The biggest threat to the health of domestic pigs is wild boar. Farmers in Madona, Jēkabpils, Valmiera, Cēsis, Limbaži, Gulbene, Aizkraukle, Dobele, Ogre and Tukums districts should be particularly careful as they have the highest number of wild boars infected with ASF.
