The highest daily total so far remains December 31, when 1,861 new infections were confirmed.
The total number of cases since the start of the pandemic now stands at 43,942.
Of 12,352 tests carried out in the last 24 hours, 6.7% were positive, down sharply on the 11.2% rate the previous day.

Unfortunately, 30 more deaths were also confirmed January 5. Of those, two victims were aged 50-60, three were aged 60-70, twelve were aged 70-80, nine were aged 80-90 and four were aged 90-95 years.
In total 722 people have now died in Latvia as a result of the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.
The National Health Service (NVD) said that during the last 24 hours 678 people were vaccinated, bringing the total so far to 2,923. However, the NVD also added that the number of vaccinated people published on a daily basis may fluctuate, because data on vaccination is entered into the e-health system within one to five working days after the fact of vaccination.

The NVD also said that 1180 Covid-19 patients are currently treated in Latvia's hospitals. Of that number, 68 have severe symptoms of the disease.

Meanwhile in Lithuania 1,510 new cases of COVID-19 and 27 deaths were recorded Tuesday, and in Estonia the figures were 429 cases and 6 deaths.

Use of nose and mouth coverings is compulsory in all public places indoors, including workplaces, and there are restrictions on what goods can be bought from stores.
