Last week, June 27 to July 3, the newly detected Covid-19 case count nearly doubled, according to Disease Prevention and Control Center's information of July 5.

Compared to the week prior, the number of newly detected cases rose from 1523 to 2944, an increase of 93.3%.

The number of people hospitalized with Covid-19 also rose significantly last week, by 42.2%. On average 19 people were hospitalized daily. On Monday, July 4, from all 142 people in hospitals with Covid-19, 39% of them had it as the primary diagnosis.

Most people contracting the illness were aged 20 to 69. The prevalence grew all across Latvia, the fastest growth being in Rīga and the vicinity.

As reported earlier by LSM, a rise in Covid-19 morbidity has lately been observed throughout Europe. SPKC is not raising alarm yet as most cases are mild and treated at home; at the same time, all health and safety precautions are still recommended.
