Covid certificate to expire within month for 150,000 people

On February 15, around 150 thousand people's vaccination certificates will expire unless they get a booster until then, National Health Service (NVD) vaccination project division's head Eva Juhņēviča said at a media briefing January 17.

349 thousand people's primary vaccination certificates will expire on February 15 but over 200,000 have already received a booster vaccine.

Juhņēviča said that Latvia is currently prepared to ensure the smooth availability of booster vaccine with approximately 100,000 jabs per week. She stressed that, now that there are no big queues, it would be important for people to use the opportunity so that on February 16 there are no unpleasant surprises.

At the briefing, infectologist Uga Dumpis also stressed the importance of the booster shot.

“We, as hospital doctors, want to highlight the personal benefits,” Dumpis said, explaining that six months after primary vaccination of Covid-19, the risk of severe symptoms and death of Covid-19 disease rises, mainly in people with risk factors.

He also said that primary vaccination is still important as many have not done it, and that those who have recovered should also get vaccinated as there have been cases when someone who has had the Delta variant a few months ago gets the Omicron now.

The expiry term for vaccine certificates in Latvia is 5 months after Janssen vaccination and 9 months after other manufacturers' vaccines.
