Riga East Clinical University Hospital (RAKUS) medical staff say that at least this spring, Covid has been defeated, Latvian Television reported on May 23.

RAKUS is currently treating 71 patients with an approved Covid infection. Most of them have been admitted for other reasons, and Covid has only been discovered afterwards. This is five to six times less than during the peak of the pandemic. Only 15 of those people have Covid as the primary diagnosis, 56 have it as the secondary illness.

"71 Covid patients, well, it is nothing, actually the Covid has been defeated," said RAKUS board member Haralds Plaudis.

Three cases of Covid were discovered overnight, so doctors think this is a moment of respite. However, the admissions department is still busy.

“Now we have a combo! We have a bit of Covid, but there is flu and other viruses. Viruses and bacteria that attack a person,” said Olga Saļuka from the admissions department.

Since March 2020, 10,825 Covid patients have been treated at RAKUS. It was the staff at the admissions department who carried out the first examinations and saved many lives.  RAKUS has organized a special ceremony to thank the admissions department for their work in this time.
