Face shields may now only be used together with mask in Latvia

In order to reduce the spread of Covid-19, face shields will only be used together with a face mask, the government decided on Tuesday, February 2.

The Ministry of Health statement explains that it has now been proved that the use of both disposable medical facial masks and multi-use non-medical facial masks reduces the risk of transmitting SARS-CoV-2 infection from person to person.

The effectiveness of facial shields has not been proved. In order to limit the spread of the virus, the cover of mouth and nose must be tightly attached to the face. This is ensured only wearing a mask. Shields allow droplets to spread in the environment,  according to VM.

Thus, in future, people will only be allowed to use medical or hygiene facial masks in public places.

At the same time, the facial shields may be used to protect the mucosa of the eyes, or the face from contact with one's hands, but not for the containment of respiratory droplets.

Therefore, they should only be used in combination with a face mask in the future. Compliance with these requirements will also be controlled by the responsible authorities.
