First cases of coronavirus detected in Lithuania and Belarus

Lithuania has joined Estonia in registering a case of the  Covid-19 coronavirus, reported Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT February 28, However, Latvia has still to detect a confirmed case.

According to Lithuania's Emergency Coordination Center, coranavirus was detected in a 39-year-old woman who had returned to the city of Kaunas February 24 after visiting Verona in a part of northern Italy with a cluster of cases.

The Lithuanian Ministry of Health disclosed that a woman is currently in isolation in Šiauliai Hospital, which has the appropriate equipment for the circumstances.

On February 26, Lithuania declared an emergency situation in anticipation of the possible appearance of coronovirus.

In Belarus, which also borders Latvia, coronavirus was detected in an Iranian student who arrived on a flight from Baku, Azerbaijan's capital, on February 22, the LETA agency reported, citing the Belarusian Ministry of Health.

"The patient and the people who were in contact with him have been placed in closed rooms at the Minsk Hospital for Infectious Diseases. The young person feels comfortable," a ministry statement said.

Meanwhile in Latvia no cases have yet been confirmed. The Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) said Friday morning that of 23 samples sent for testing during the last 24 hours, 22 had been confirmed as negative, while one test was still awaiting confirmation. So far 65 tests have been carried out since January 29.
