Flu decreases in intensity, but has claimed 11 more lives last week

Last week flu intensity in Latvia dropped by 25.8 percent, still it claimed lives of 11 more people in a week, according to data from the Center for Disease Prevention and Control.

Altogether, 48 people have died of flu since the beginning of the flue season. The average age of the flu victims is 65 and they all suffered from chronic illnesses. While the vaccination status of six flu victims remained unknown, 31 patients had not been vaccinated.

During the previous epidemic, flu killed 91 people, and a year before 75 people succumbed to the seasonal infection.

Last week, the flu rate dropped to 269.4 cases per 100,000 residents, down from 363 cases per 100,000 residents a week before. The intensity was over 100 cases per 100,000 residents in all monitored territories, except Jekabpils.

A flu epidemic in Latvia was declared on January 15.
